Locals given chance to skate with or against the Leafs’ alumni

One Lindsay policeman won’t get a delay of game penalty after finding out that he could lace up with the Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni to raise money for the Food Source next March.

Kawartha Lakes Food Source executive-director Roberta Sommerville said Kawartha Lakes Police Service Constable Paul Hatton marched into her office with $250 in cash to secure a spot as a forward on the alumni team. The pay-to-play game will see a forward, defenseman and assistant coach joining the alumni against a team of 17 local players. Those interested in joining the local team can sign on for just $150 for what Sommerville terms a “thrill of a lifetime.” The game will be played March 8, 2014 at the Lindsay Recreational Complex.

Const. Hatton said he thought it was a small price to pay since “you can’t pass up an opportunity like that. It is a chance of a lifetime.” Const. Hatton plays men’s league hockey and qualifies as he is 35 years old-plus. He said he loves playing hockey and taking part in this particular game is an opportunity to give back to the community by supporting Food Source. Add the chance of being in a dressing room with NHL legends, some of whom have hoisted a Stanley Cup, and playing with them makes Const. Hatton – who is the father of a 13-year-old boy – as excited as a boy himself. “I’m Canadian, right. Hockey’s number one in this country. Young or old anybody would jump at this opportunity, even just to talk to these players.”

The Food Source is also looking for event sponsorship, the local teams’ jersey sponsorship, souvenir program advertising, and, of course, people to attend the game. There will be a select number of VIP tickets sold ($100), which includes preferred seating for the game preceded by a reception; regular tickets are just $25 each and standing room tickets $15. Contact the Food Source to secure your tickets, which will be mailed out in January.
