Encouraging community organizations to apply for the Safer and Vital Communities (SVC) Grant – Theme Crime Prevention Through the Promotion of Mental Health

I am pleased to advise you that the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services is now inviting applications from community-based, not-for-profit, incorporated organizations and Chiefs and Band Councils for the 2014/15 – 2015/16 . Although police services are not eligible for this grant, our support is integral, as applicants are required to provide a police letter of support with their application.

For the current call for applications, the ministry is making an administrative change to the SVC Grant by extending it from a one-year program to a two-year program on a one-time pilot basis. It is anticipated that this additional year will provide sufficient time for successful applicants to implement their projects and produce better outcomes, as they will have a better opportunity to establish strong networks, determine their projects’ success and arrange future funding for their projects. Please note that due to this one-time administrative change, there will not be a call for applications in 2015/16. After the two years, a decision will be made on whether to return the SVC Grant to a one-year program or to continue it as a two-year program, based on the success of the pilot.

The SVC Grant encourages the development and implementation of community-led crime prevention projects. The theme for the 2014/15-2015/16 grant is Crime Prevention Through the Promotion of Mental Health. The ministry is requesting proposals that focus on creating and/or enhancing protective factors that promote mental health among at-risk individuals, with the goal to prevent crime and increase safety in their communities. Applicants must demonstrate involvement  of the police and mental health service providers in their projects.

They are also encouraged to partner with organizations in other sectors for the effective delivery of an integrated approach to preventing and/or reducing crime.

If you are interested in more information email me at jhagarty@klps.ca and I’ll forward you more information.

Please note that completed applications, along  with all supporting documentation, must be received by the ministry no later than 4:00pm on March 27, 2014.
